Should I buy a natural or lab grown diamond?

Both are diamonds with identical chemical, physical, and optical properties. Lab grown costs less, so the same budget buys a visibly larger stone. Natural diamonds are finite, and only natural center stones qualify for our Lifetime Diamond Upgrade. Lab grown prices have fallen steadily as production expands, so it shouldn't be bought as something that holds value. There is no wrong answer — come look at both under the same light.

Can I get an engagement ring the same day on Long Island?

Can I use my own diamond or a family heirloom stone?

Yes, and it's one of the main reasons we sell settings on their own. Bring us an inherited stone, a diamond from a previous ring, or one you already own, and we'll set it into any designer setting we carry. You're welcome to sit at the bench and watch Oscar H., our master setter, place your stone — most people who bring in a family diamond want to see exactly where it goes, and we'd rather you did. Q: Does the price of a designer engagement ring include the diamond?

No. On nearly every designer engagement ring, the price shown is for the setting only. The center diamond is chosen and priced separately, based on the shape, size, and quality you want. When a Verragio, Gabriel & Co., A.JAFFE, Sylvie, or Noam Carver ring arrives from the designer, the stone in the center is a placeholder that holds the shape until your diamond is set in its place. The exception is our ready-to-ship rings, which are sold complete.

In our Oceanside showroom our GIA Graduate Gemologists will set the actual stone into the actual setting and let you see it on her hand before you spend anything. How Buying a Designer Ring Actually Works

Nearly every designer engagement ring is two purchases, not one. The designer builds the setting. The center diamond is chosen separately — by you. When a Verragio, Gabriel & Co., A.JAFFE, Sylvie, or Noam Carver ring arrives from the designer, the stone in the center is a placeholder, holding the shape until your diamond takes its place.

This is standard across the industry, and almost nobody says it out loud. Once you know it, everything about ring shopping gets easier.

One

The Setting

The designer's work — the metal, the shank, the accent diamonds, the head built to hold your stone. This carries the designer's name, and it's what the price on the ring's page reflects.

Two

The Center Diamond

Chosen separately, and where most of the budget usually goes. Natural or lab grown, the shape, the carat weight, the grading report. Two people can pick the same setting and wear completely different rings.

Reading the Price

When you see a price on a designer engagement ring page, that price is for the setting. The center diamond is quoted separately, based on the shape, size, and quality you choose.

Some of our settings are quoted rather than listed. If a ring you like doesn't show a price, call us at (516) 766-2614 and we'll price it with you.

The exception is our ready-to-ship rings, sold complete with the center diamond already set.

Natural or Lab Grown: How to Choose

Both are diamonds. A lab grown diamond has the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as a mined one — the same hardness, the same brilliance. Even our gemologists need equipment to tell them apart. What differs is where the stone came from, what it costs, and how it holds value.

Natural Diamonds

Formed underground over a stretch of time that's hard to picture, and finite in a way lab grown isn't. Couples choose them because the stone's history is part of what's being given.

Natural center stones are the only ones eligible for our Lifetime Diamond Upgrade — trade yours toward a larger or higher-quality natural diamond later, at full credit, with no expiration.

Lab Grown Diamonds

Grown in a controlled environment and priced well below a natural diamond of the same size and quality. For most couples that means a visibly larger center stone — or the same size with budget left for the wedding.

The trade-off is resale. Lab grown prices have fallen steadily as production expands, so buy it for the look and the size today — not as something that holds its value.

What We Actually Tell People

There's no wrong answer and we don't push either one. If the stone's origin matters to her, or you want the option to trade up later, go natural. If size is what she'll notice, lab grown gets you more of it. Look at both under the same light before you decide — most people arrive certain and leave having changed their mind about something.

Either way, every engagement ring from SVS carries our lifetime warranty — cleaning, inspection, prong tightening, and minor prong re-tipping, for as long as you own it.

A note on moissanite: we've moved to natural and lab grown diamonds only. Our remaining moissanite pieces are on final clearance.
