How much does it cost to redesign a ring?

It depends on the design. Redesigned engagement rings at SVS start at approximately $1,500 and move up based on your metal, the size and quality of your center stone, and how intricate the setting is. Redesigned earrings, pendants and other pieces have started as low as $500. Because the design, setting and finishing happen at our Oceanside showroom, there is no third party manufacturing markup, which often puts a redesigned piece close to the price of a ready made designer ring of comparable quality. You see pricing at every step, and no deposit is required to begin the design process.

How long does a jewelry redesign take?

Most redesigns take four to six weeks from your first consultation to the finished piece. Simpler remounts can be done in as little as two to three weeks. More intricate designs take longer. If you have a date you are working toward, an anniversary, a wedding, a birthday, tell us at the consultation and we will tell you honestly whether it is possible before you commit to anything.

Can I redesign my engagement ring after a divorce?

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons people come to us. The diamond is yours and it is worth something regardless of the history attached to it. Most people reset it as a right hand ring, rebuild it as a pendant, split the stones between children, or trade it toward something entirely new. Any of those is a normal request here. We will not ask you about it and we will not make it a moment.

Can you turn my engagement ring into a necklace or pendant?

Yes. Moving a center stone into a pendant is one of the simplest and least expensive redesigns we do, and it is a common choice for a ring that is no longer worn but is not for sale either. The same applies to earrings. A pair of studs can be built from stones that came out of a ring, and side stones that would otherwise sit in an envelope often become a second piece.

Will I see the design before you build it?

Yes, twice. We render your new setting in CAD so you can see it from every angle, then print it in wax so you can hold the actual proportions in your hand and try the shape on your finger. Nothing is cast, cut or set until you have approved that. Revisions at the design stage cost nothing, which is exactly why we do it in this order.

Can you redesign a Verragio, A.JAFFE or other designer ring?

We do not alter another designer's mounting. Those pieces are built to a specific house standard and cutting into someone else's work is not something we will do. What we do instead is remove your stones and build you something new around them. The original mounting stays intact and comes back to you, or goes toward your trade in credit. Your choice.

Is my redesigned ring covered by a warranty?

Every engagement ring we build carries the Preferred Nationwide Lifetime Warranty, including one built around your own stone. It covers lifetime inspection and cleaning, tightening of diamonds and gems, minor re-tipping of worn prongs, one resizing after the original, and replacement of round diamonds up to 0.20 ctw. It stays active with an inspection every six months and is honored at Preferred retailers nationwide. Every redesigned piece, including pendants, earrings and bands, leaves the store with ten days of complimentary Zillion coverage. The lifetime warranty is a maintenance warranty, not insurance, so it does not cover loss, theft or damage. We recommend insuring the piece properly.

What is my old setting worth if I trade it in?

When you redesign with us we pay a 20 percent premium over our standard buying price on the metal you trade toward the new piece. That applies to the mounting your stones came out of and to any other unworn gold you bring along with it. We weigh and test it in front of you and the credit comes straight off your new piece. Nothing is melted or sent anywhere until you have agreed to the number.

What is the difference between redesign and custom design?

Redesign starts with a piece you already own. We take your existing stones and build a new setting around them. Custom design starts from nothing, with a stone you select from our inventory or one we source for you. The design process is the same either way, CAD rendering, wax model, then the bench. If you are not sure which one your project is, bring the piece in and we will tell you.

Do I need to come in, or can we do this remotely?

Redesign is an in person service. Because your stones stay with us for the length of the project, we need to receive them from you and return them to you here in Oceanside rather than by mail. Most of the process can still be flexible. Design reviews and approvals can happen by phone or email once we have seen the piece, so you are not making a trip for every step.

No. From the moment you hand us your piece to the moment your new setting is finished, your stones stay in Oceanside. They do not go to a caster, a trade shop, or into a shipping envelope. Some settings we cast at our own bench and some go to a caster we have worked with for years, depending on the design. That step happens to empty metal, long before your stones are near it. If you would rather hold onto your diamonds yourself until the setting is ready, that is completely fine.

How Jewelry Redesign Works

Four steps, and you approve every one of them before we move forward. Nothing is cut, pulled, or set until you have seen exactly what you are getting.

Bring It In

Sit down with us and show us the piece. We talk through what you want to keep, what you want to change, and what is realistic for the stones you have. Free, and no deposit to begin.

See The Design First

We render your new setting in CAD and print it in wax so you can try the shape on your hand. You are looking at your actual ring, at actual size, before anything is built.

You Approve It

Change the profile, the prong style, the metal, the proportions. We revise until it is right. Your stones stay untouched in our safe the entire time.

Watch It Get Set

Come in and take a seat at our open bench. Master Setter Oscar H. sets your stones into the finished setting while you watch. Most people stay for the whole thing.

Your Stone, In Your Setting, Before It Exists In Metal

A rendering on a screen only tells you so much. We print the setting in wax and seat your actual stone in it, so you can hold the proportions in your hand and change anything you want while changing it still costs nothing.

Not to a caster, not to a trade shop, not overnight in a shipping envelope. From the moment you hand us your piece to the moment your new setting is finished, your diamonds stay here in Oceanside.

Some settings we cast at our own bench and some go to a caster we have worked with for years, depending on the design. Either way that step happens to empty metal, long before your stones are anywhere near it. If you would rather hold onto your diamonds yourself until the setting is ready, that is completely fine. Plenty of clients do.

It is the part of this that an online retailer cannot offer at any price. You cannot watch a website set your grandmother's diamond.

Where The Magic Happens

Pull Up A Seat And Watch

There are two seats on the other side of our bench, and when your setting is ready we will call you and ask you to come sit in one. Master Setter Oscar H. will place your stones into the new mounting while you watch it happen, inches away, in the same room.

It is a small thing that turns out to matter enormously. People bring us a ring their mother wore for forty years, and the hardest part is handing it over. Watching the stone go into its new setting is how that ends: not with a phone call telling you it is ready, but with you sitting there when it happens.

Starting Points

What We Redesign

If it has a stone in it, or a stone that used to be in it, it is a starting point. Rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets. Most of what comes across our counter has been sitting in a drawer for years because it is too meaningful to sell and not quite wearable as it is.

Heirloom Engagement Rings

The most common redesign we do. A grandmother's or mother's ring where the stone is beautiful and the setting is worn thin, out of style, or the wrong size to resize safely. We reset the diamond into something you will actually put on.

Inherited Pieces

Brooches, cocktail rings, cluster pieces, pendants from an era that is not yours. The stones are often excellent. We pull them and build something you would have chosen yourself.

Worn Wedding Bands

Decades of daily wear thins a shank and loosens channel work past the point where repair makes sense. Rather than patch it again, we move the diamonds into a new band built to last another thirty years.

Rings From A Marriage That Ended

The diamond is yours and it is worth something, whatever else is true. Reset as a right hand ring, rebuilt as a pendant, split between children, or traded toward something with no history attached. We will not ask you about it and we will not make it a moment.

Loose Stones

Diamonds in an envelope in a safe deposit box. A stone that came out of a piece years ago and never went anywhere. Bring them in and we will tell you honestly what they are and what they could become.

Earrings And Pendants

Studs whose backs never sat right, a pendant too heavy to wear, a single earring whose match is long gone. Small pieces are some of our favorite redesigns, and often the least expensive place to start.

Rings You Have Outgrown

An anniversary, a milestone, or simply a style you chose at twenty five and would not choose now. The stone is still yours. The setting does not have to be.

Odd Gold And Orphans

Broken chains, class rings, gold that will never be worn again. It can be traded toward the metal in your new piece rather than sitting in a drawer.

When you redesign with us, we pay a 20% premium over our standard buying price on the metal you trade in toward your new piece. That applies to the mounting we take your stones out of, and to any other unworn gold you bring along with it.

We weigh and test it in front of you and the credit comes straight off your new piece. Nothing is melted or sent anywhere until you have agreed to the number.

If Your Piece Is A Designer Ring

We do not alter another designer's work. A Verragio or A.JAFFE mounting is built to that house's specification, and cutting into it is not something we will do to someone else's piece.

What Protects It Afterward

A redesigned piece is a new piece, and it is covered like one. There is a real advantage here that surprises people: a warranty requires the item to be in new or like-new condition, so a thin, worn heirloom mounting often cannot carry one at all. Rebuilding it is what makes it eligible.

The lifetime warranty is a maintenance warranty, not insurance. It does not cover loss, theft, or accidental damage, and it does not cover your center stone. That is exactly why we hand every client ten days of Zillion coverage on the way out the door and tell you to insure the piece properly.
