The ALOR Story
From a Nuclear Engineer to a Global Cable Empire
ALOR is one of those brands with an origin story that does not sound like it could possibly belong to a jewelry company. Jack Zemer was a nuclear engineer at General Electric. His wife Sandy was an emerald importer with a creative idea: that the women buying her loose stones deserved a different kind of jewelry, less stiff, less ornate, made to be worn every day rather than locked in a safe. In 1979, Jack and Sandy founded ALOR in San Diego, named after the first letters of their two sons' first names, Tal and Ori.
By the early 1980s, ALOR had begun publicly showing its nautical cable motif, the intricately twisted stainless steel cable that would become the brand's permanent signature. The technical insight came from Jack's engineering background: stainless steel could be braided and finished to a precision that no other jewelry material allowed, then accented with 18K gold and diamonds for the contrast that made the design read. The combination was unlike anything else in the American jewelry market at the time, and it gave ALOR a category of its own.
Today ALOR is run by Tal and Ori Zemer as Principals and Presidents, headquartered in San Diego and shipped to authorized retailers globally. The brand has expanded into men's pieces, Apple Watch bands, bridal jewelry and Swiss watches, but the core remains what it has been since 1979: the cable, the gold, the diamonds, and the hands that braid each strand.
