Tennis or Solitaire
A tennis necklace is a continuous line of diamonds all the way round, so it reads as jewelry from the moment you walk in. A solitaire pendant is one stone on a chain, and it disappears under a collar when you want it to. They are not really competing with each other. One is an occasion piece you build an outfit around, the other is something you put on in the morning and forget.
Crosses and hearts sit somewhere between the two, and they are the pieces people most often buy as gifts, because the shape carries meaning the recipient does not have to explain.

What to Look At Instead
A tennis necklace holds a great many small diamonds, and small diamonds are almost never individually graded. That is true across the industry for natural and lab grown alike. What you judge is how closely the stones match each other, whether the line lies flat against the collarbone or twists, and the clasp, which on a necklace carries the whole weight. Bring one to the counter and we will show you all three in about a minute.
