A 10.30 carat round black diamond raised on a pavé-set basket, above a shank set all the way around with white diamonds. A scale and a contrast you very rarely see in an engagement ring.
Sami V. Saatchi bought this stone in Antwerp and carried it home himself. Antwerp has been the center of the diamond trade for five centuries, and buying there means sitting across a table from the seller with a loupe in hand rather than choosing from a list. Sami is a tenth-generation jeweler, a GIA Graduate Gemologist, and President and co-founder of SVS. He designed this ring around the stone at our own bench.
Black diamonds read as opaque rather than brilliant. They absorb light instead of returning it, which is why one at this size looks less like a gemstone and more like a piece of sculpture on the hand. The 1.58 carats of white diamonds, VS range and F to G color, are set where they do the most work: along the shoulders and gallery of the basket, and continuing around the full shank. They outline the black stone from every angle and light the finger underneath it, so the center reads as deliberate rather than heavy.
The center is a natural diamond that has been color-treated to achieve its black appearance, which is how the large majority of black diamonds in jewelry are produced. Treated black diamonds are stable and durable in normal wear. The treatment should be disclosed to any jeweler doing future work on the ring, and steam or ultrasonic cleaning is best left to us.
The mounting is 18 karat white gold, size 5.5. Because the shank is set with diamonds the full way around, this ring cannot be resized. It was built once, at this size, around this stone. If it fits, it was made for you, and if it does not, come in and talk to us about what we can build around a stone of your own.
