Engagement Ring Care · Oceanside, NY
Your engagement ring is one of the most personal pieces of jewelry you will ever own — worn through dish water, beach days, gym sessions, and just about every quiet, ordinary moment in between. Over time, that everyday wear takes a quiet toll: lotion clouds the diamond, prongs loosen, the band picks up tiny scratches you barely notice until your ring looks different in a certain light.
The good news: most of what your ring needs to stay brilliant is simple. A few daily habits at home, the right cleaning routine, the right insurance partner, and a free professional check-in with our team every six months. Here are four things every engagement ring deserves — and how SVS Fine Jewelry helps with each one.
1. Daily Habits That Protect Your Ring
Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth — but the prongs and settings that hold them are not. The most common engagement ring damage we see in our Oceanside showroom is not from anything dramatic. It is from accumulated everyday contact: a prong catches on a sweater, a halo chips against a kitchen counter, a band picks up scratches from gym equipment.
A few simple habits prevent most of it:
- Take your ring off before the gym, gardening, swimming, beach days, deep cleaning, or any task involving heavy lifting or harsh chemicals.
- Put it on last after lotion, sunscreen, perfume, and hairspray. These products cloud the diamond faster than anything else.
- Have a designated spot at home where your ring lives when it is off — a soft pouch, a ring dish, or a dedicated case — never on the edge of a sink.
- When traveling, use a proper jewelry travel case. We carry both a Travel Jewelry Case for full trips and a smaller Travel Jewelry Key Chain for daily on-the-go protection.
Five extra seconds of habit saves you a repair bill — and protects the sparkle of the diamond you said yes to.
2. Cleaning Your Ring at Home
Engagement rings get dirty in subtle ways. Hand cream and soap film build up underneath the diamond, in the gallery, and around the prongs — the exact places light is supposed to enter the stone. A clean ring looks dramatically brighter than the same ring a week later, and most clients are surprised by how quickly the dullness creeps in.
The simple at-home method: warm (not hot) water, a small drop of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Soak for ten to fifteen minutes, gently brush behind and underneath the diamond where film collects, rinse with the drain closed or under a strainer, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Once a week is plenty for most rings.
For something more thorough, we recommend professional jewelry cleaning products designed for fine jewelry. A few of our favorites:
- SVS Jewelry Cleaning Kit — everything you need to keep your ring brilliant between professional cleanings.
- Natural Jewelry Cleaning Foam — a gentle, plant-based formula safe for everyday use on diamonds and most gemstones.
- Natural Jewelry Cleaning Pen — perfect for purses and travel; a quick brush refreshes your ring anywhere.
What to avoid: toothpaste (too abrasive — scratches gold), chlorine bleach or pool water (damages alloys and weakens prongs), ammonia-based glass cleaners on anything other than plain diamonds and platinum, and at-home ultrasonic cleaners on rings with pearls, opals, emeralds, or any treated or fracture-filled stones.
When in doubt, bring it in. Professional cleaning is always free at SVS — for any client, on any piece — and our team can tell you in seconds whether your stone is safe for ultrasonic cleaning. Learn more at our Free Jewelry Cleaning page.
3. Protect Your Ring With Specialty Jewelry Insurance
One question we get more than almost any other: do I really need separate jewelry insurance, or is my homeowners policy enough?
The honest answer is that most homeowners and renters policies cap jewelry coverage at a low limit — often $1,000 to $2,500 — well below the value of most engagement rings. Filing a jewelry claim through a homeowners policy can also raise your premium or affect your policy renewal. Specialty jewelry insurance solves both problems: coverage that actually matches your ring's value, no deductible in most cases, and worldwide protection against loss, theft, accidental damage, and mysterious disappearance.
SVS Fine Jewelry recommends two trusted partners:
- Zillion — our primary insurance partner. Zillion provides instant quotes, no-deductible coverage, and concierge claims handled directly through our showroom. Get a Zillion quote.
- Jewelers Mutual — an industry-leading specialty insurer since 1913, available as an alternative if Zillion is not the right fit for your situation.
Most policies require a current professional appraisal to issue or renew coverage. SVS provides in-house appraisals from our GIA-trained team — learn about our appraisal services.
For full details on both partners, visit our Jewelry Insurance page. SVS Fine Jewelry does not sell insurance and is not a licensed insurance agent. The choice of partner, coverage, and policy terms is yours to make directly with the carrier.
4. Bring It In Every Six Months — Free, For Life
This is the part most clients do not realize they have access to. Every engagement ring purchased at SVS Fine Jewelry — natural diamond, lab grown diamond, or gemstone — includes our complimentary Lifetime Warranty. That means free cleaning, free prong inspection, free re-tipping when needed, and free refinishing — for life, with no time limit or visit cap.
A six-month check-in is the single best thing you can do for your ring. Our master jewelers, Jorge T. and Oscar H., inspect each prong under magnification, ultrasonic-clean the piece, polish the band, and refinish the metal if needed. Most appointments take fifteen minutes — you can watch us work, or drop off and come back.
Did not buy your ring at SVS? No problem. Our complimentary cleaning service is available to every client, on any piece — not just rings purchased at our showroom. We are happy to take a look, clean the piece while you wait, and give you an honest opinion on whether anything needs attention from a jeweler.

When to Bring It in Right Away
Some signs do not wait for a routine six-month check-in. If you notice any of the following, bring your ring in as soon as you can:
- A diamond that wiggles when you gently touch it — one or more prongs may be worn or bent.
- A snag on fabric or hair when wearing the ring — a prong is likely lifted or bent outward.
- A diamond that looks cloudy or dim even after cleaning — could be deep buildup, or could be a sign the stone has shifted in its setting.
- Visible scratches or rough spots on the band — an in-house polish brings the metal back to new.
- A ring that suddenly feels loose or tight — small resizes are usually same-day in our Oceanside workshop.
Most jewelry repairs at SVS are completed the same day, by our master jewelers, in our own workshop — not shipped out. See our Jewelry Repair page for the full list of services.
