About the Author

Morgan Nicki Saatchi is co-owner of SVS Fine Jewelry, a locally owned bridal jeweler in Oceanside, NY since 2003. Over 23 years, the SVS team has helped Long Island couples plan their proposals, design custom engagement rings, and source natural and lab grown diamonds — earning over 2,500 five-star Google reviews along the way. Have a proposal question? Book a private bridal appointment or reach the team.

Long Island has been the backdrop for some of the most beautiful "yes" moments in the country — and the surrounding area expands the canvas in every direction. We should know. For over two decades, couples have brought us their proposal stories, and the same spots come up again and again. Some are world-famous. Others are quiet little pockets of the island that only locals know about. A few are right across the bridge in Manhattan or Brooklyn, where Long Island couples take advantage of being a 40-minute train ride from one of the most romantic cities on earth. Here's our 2026 guide to the best places to propose for Long Island couples — organized by vibe, so you can find the one that feels like you.

Long Island's Top Proposal Spots at a Glance

The most popular places to propose on Long Island in 2026 are the Long Beach Boardwalk, Jones Beach State Park, Nickerson Beach, Montauk Point Lighthouse, OHEKA CASTLE, Old Westbury Gardens, Planting Fields Arboretum, Bedell Cellars vineyard, Sag Harbor, Greenport, and Avalon Park & Preserve. For NYC skyline proposals, the Empire State Building Observatory, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and DUMBO at sunset are top picks for Long Island couples — all reachable in under an hour from Nassau County.

Why Long Island Is Made for Proposals

Long Island gives you everything in one trip — Atlantic beaches, historic Gold Coast estates, working vineyards, lighthouse cliffs, and tucked-away gardens that look like they belong in a film. Whether you're planning something dramatic or something quiet, there's a corner of this island that fits.

And here's the thing about a Long Island proposal: it's never just about the location. It's about a place that already means something to the two of you — the boardwalk where you took your first walk, the vineyard where you spent your first anniversary, the lighthouse you kept saying you'd visit and never did. The most memorable proposals we've seen aren't the most photogenic — they're the most personal.

Here are 30 of our favorites, broken down by vibe.

Beach Proposals: Atlantic Coast Romance

Long Island's south shore beaches are the obvious classic — and for good reason. There's something about the rhythm of the waves and the open horizon that makes the moment feel bigger than the two of you. A few favorites:

Long Beach Boardwalk

Just five minutes from our Oceanside showroom, the Long Beach Boardwalk runs over two miles along the Atlantic and offers some of the best sunrise and sunset views on the south shore. Couples love the stretch near the National Boulevard entrance, where the boardwalk widens and you can step down toward the water for a quieter moment. It's also wheelchair-accessible the whole length — easy logistics for family who want to be there.

Jones Beach State Park

The iconic water tower, the wide expanse of sand, the Wantagh sunsets — Jones Beach is Long Island's most recognizable beach and one of the most photographed proposal spots in the state. Field 6 (the western end) tends to be the quietest. If you go at sunrise on a weekday, you may have the whole stretch nearly to yourselves.

Nickerson Beach, Lido Beach

Just past Long Beach on the same barrier island, Nickerson Beach spreads across 155 acres of Nassau County oceanfront. It's the closest true Atlantic beach to our Oceanside showroom, and the dunes at the eastern end stay quiet even in August. The park runs 8:00 am to dusk, so a sunrise proposal here is entirely doable on a weekday morning with almost nobody around.

Cooper's Beach, Southampton

Regularly ranked among the top beaches in America, Cooper's Beach has the kind of soft white sand and dune-lined coastline that feels straight out of a magazine. The drive is longer (about 90 minutes from Oceanside on a good day), but the payoff is real — and you'll be in the Hamptons for dinner afterward.

Montauk Point

The easternmost tip of Long Island, where the cliffs drop into the Atlantic and the lighthouse stands sentinel over centuries of seafaring history. Montauk in late spring or early fall — before or after the Hamptons rush — offers a dramatic, almost cinematic backdrop. Aim for golden hour and bring a windbreaker.

Sunken Meadow State Park, Kings Park

If the south shore feels too familiar, Sunken Meadow offers three miles of Long Island Sound shoreline and a three-quarter-mile boardwalk, with glacier-carved bluffs rising above the western end. The Sound is calmer than the Atlantic, which makes for quieter photos and easier conversation. The park is open sunrise to sunset year-round. Worth knowing: no pets are permitted, so leave the dog out of the plan here.

Gold Coast Estates & Gardens

If The Great Gatsby is more your speed than open beaches, Long Island's North Shore is dotted with historic estates and arboretums that look like Europe transplanted to Nassau County. These are some of the most elegant proposal locations in the Northeast.

OHEKA CASTLE, Huntington

Built between 1914 and 1919 for financier Otto Kahn and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, OHEKA CASTLE was the second-largest private home in the United States as originally configured. The formal gardens, laid out along a sunken axial plan, are the proposal spot — and the estate runs guided mansion tours by reservation, which gives you a natural reason to be there. Tours begin at 11:00 am daily. There's also a bar and restaurant on site if you want dinner to follow without leaving the grounds.

Old Westbury Gardens

200 acres of formal gardens, walled rose gardens, lakes, and allées surrounding Westbury House, a 1906 Charles II-style mansion. Old Westbury Gardens' Walled Garden in late spring and early summer is iconic — peonies, roses, and lavender all in bloom. Buy tickets in advance, especially on weekends. Photographers know this spot well, so coordinating with one in advance is doable.

Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay

409 acres of greenhouses, formal gardens, and the historic Coe Hall. The Italian Blue Pool Garden and Synoptic Garden at Planting Fields are particularly romantic, and the property is large enough that you can almost always find a private moment. State park admission, no advance ticket needed.

Vanderbilt Museum — Eagle's Nest, Centerport

William K. Vanderbilt II spent decades building Eagle's Nest, a 43-acre waterfront estate overlooking Northport Harbor, and the Spanish Revival architecture — stucco, red tile, courtyards, towers — looks nothing like the rest of the Gold Coast. The waterfront gardens and terraces at the Vanderbilt Museum catch the light beautifully in late afternoon. If you want to make an evening of it, the planetarium on the property runs shows year-round.

Sands Point Preserve, Port Washington

Three historic mansions (Hempstead House, Castle Gould, and Falaise) overlooking Long Island Sound. The cliff walk along the water at Sands Point Preserve is one of the most underrated proposal spots on the North Shore — wooded path opens up to sweeping water views.

Wine Country Proposals: North Fork & Beyond

Long Island's wine country has come into its own in the last decade. The North Fork in particular has the relaxed, vineyard-rolling quality of a smaller Napa, with the added benefit of being less than two hours from most of Nassau County. Two stops worth knowing:

Bedell Cellars, Cutchogue

Modern, design-forward tasting room with a back patio that opens onto the vines. Bedell Cellars' sunset hours in summer are reliably gorgeous, and the staff is genuinely welcoming if you let them know in advance you're planning something special — they'll often help with reserved seating or champagne.

Wölffer Estate, Sagaponack

Technically South Fork rather than North, but Wölffer's twilight tasting events on Friday and Saturday evenings during summer have become a legitimate Long Island ritual. The vine rows backed by hay bales and a string-lit stage make for one of the most photogenic proposal settings on the island.

Harbor Villages

Some couples don't want a park or an estate — they want a walkable evening. Dinner, a stroll, boats in the water, and a moment on the dock when the light goes gold. Long Island's old whaling and shipping villages are built for exactly that.

Sag Harbor

A major whaling port in the 19th century and now a National Register historic district, Sag Harbor has the East End's most intact village core — hundreds of preserved Greek Revival and Victorian buildings, Main Street running downhill to the water. Long Wharf at the foot of Main is the spot: boats on both sides, open water ahead, and the whole village behind you. It's the Hamptons without the scene.

Greenport

The North Fork's working harbor village, and the last stop on the LIRR's Greenport branch — which means you can do this one without a car. Mitchell Park sits right on the waterfront, and the antique carousel in its glass pavilion is an unusual and genuinely charming backdrop. Pair it with a vineyard afternoon and you have a full day on the North Fork.

Northport Village Dock

Settled as Great Cow Harbour in the 1600s and still built around a deep-water harbor, Northport has a Victorian Main Street that runs straight down to the water with trolley rails still set in the pavement. The public dock at Northport Village Park is open to everyone, with a gazebo, benches, and boats coming and going all evening. Dinner on Main Street is a two-minute walk. This is the most low-key option on this list, and for some couples that's exactly right.

Iconic Lighthouses

Long Island has more than a dozen historic lighthouses, and a few of them are made for proposals.

Montauk Point Lighthouse

Commissioned by George Washington in 1792 — the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The bluff overlook just south of Montauk Point Lighthouse offers a 180-degree ocean view that feels like the edge of the world. Bonus: there's a museum at the base if you want to make a half-day of it.

Fire Island Lighthouse

The black-and-white striped tower at Robert Moses State Park is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Long Island. The walk from the parking area to the Fire Island Lighthouse along the boardwalk through the dunes is romantic in itself — and the beach immediately east of the lighthouse is often empty.

Hidden Gems

If you want something less expected — somewhere your photos won't look like everyone else's — these are the spots locals love but tourists miss.

Avalon Park & Preserve, Stony Brook

Free, relatively unknown, and exquisitely landscaped. The Stone Bridge and Reflecting Pond at Avalon Park are particularly photogenic in autumn, and the labyrinth at the entrance has become an unofficial proposal landmark for couples who like a little symbolism with their setting.

Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Great River

691 acres along the Connetquot River with old-growth pines, rhododendron-lined trails, and a Tudor-style manor house. Bayard Cutting is underrated and uncrowded compared to its North Shore cousins. The Pinetum is otherworldly in winter; the Daffodil Walk is unbeatable in early April.

Caumsett State Historic Park, Lloyd Neck

1,500 acres of former Marshall Field estate land — meadows, forest, salt marsh, and a beach overlooking Long Island Sound. The walk from the entrance of Caumsett to the beach takes about 20 minutes, which sounds long until you realize it's exactly enough time to walk hand-in-hand and gather your nerve.

Coindre Hall, Huntington

A 40-room French château completed in 1912 for pharmaceutical heir George McKesson Brown, sitting on roughly 33 acres of open lawn above Huntington Harbor. Coindre Hall is a Suffolk County park now, free to walk, and far less discovered than the North Shore estates that charge admission. The trail runs down past the historic boathouse to the water and over to Gold Star Battalion Beach — a walk that gives you the harbor, the château behind you, and enough time to work up the nerve.

Eisenhower Park, East Meadow

Hiding in plain sight. Most people know Eisenhower Park for golf and ballfields and forget it covers 930 acres — larger than Central Park — with quiet corners most visitors never reach. The lake near the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre is the spot, especially on a weekday evening. For couples from central Nassau who want somewhere meaningful rather than dramatic, this is often the place they already have a history with.

NYC Skyline Proposals: A 40-Minute Train Ride Away

Long Island couples have a not-so-secret advantage: Manhattan and Brooklyn are a 40-minute LIRR ride from most of Nassau County. For couples who want the unmistakable energy of New York City as their backdrop — and the convenience of being home for breakfast the next morning — the city is fair game. A few favorites our clients have come back from glowing about:

The Empire State Building Observatory

Iconic for a reason. The 86th floor outdoor deck at golden hour is one of the most photographed proposal spots in the world, and the building runs a dedicated Happily Ever Empire proposal package that includes private moments, dedicated staff, and photography options. Reserve weeks in advance — they coordinate the timing so you're not surrounded by tourists for the actual moment.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Waterfront

One of the most stunning skyline views in the country, with the Brooklyn Bridge framing Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty visible to the south. Pier 1 and the Squibb Park bridge area at Brooklyn Bridge Park are particularly popular with our SVS couples — quieter than the bridge itself, with a clear view of the FiDi skyline that lights up around dusk. An Uber from western Nassau gets you there in under an hour.

DUMBO at Sunset

The cobblestone street with the Manhattan Bridge framed perfectly between the buildings (Washington Street and Water Street, if you're searching for the spot) is one of the most photographed corners of New York. Show up about an hour before sunset for warm light without the late-evening crowds.

Top of the Rock

30 Rock's observation deck offers a different angle than the Empire State Building — and the bonus of having the Empire State in your photos rather than being on it. The Beam experience and the open-air viewing decks make for a memorable proposal moment, especially in spring or fall.

Indoor & Rainy-Day Backups

If your outdoor plans get rained out — and they sometimes will — these are some of the most romantic indoor spots within reach.

The Garden City Hotel

Long Island's grande dame. The lobby's marble staircase, the chandelier, the quiet corners of the bar at The Garden City Hotel photograph beautifully and feel like an old-world hotel in the best possible way. Reserve the Polo Steakhouse for dinner afterward.

Gurney's Montauk

If your weekend was supposed to be at the beach and the weather betrayed you, the oceanfront fire pit at Gurney's Montauk saves the day. Book a room with a balcony and you'll have privacy and a view regardless of the rain.

1770 House, East Hampton

1770 House is a 12-room inn and one of the most respected restaurants on the East End. The wine cellar dining room is the kind of intimate, low-lit space that turns a proposal into something almost theatrical. Reserve weeks in advance.

Tips for Pulling Off the Perfect Proposal

After 23 years of helping Long Island couples plan this exact moment, a few patterns have emerged:

Have a weather backup. Even in summer. Especially in spring and fall. The most stressed-out proposers we see are the ones who didn't plan a Plan B and got caught in a storm.

Hire a photographer. Even a hidden one. You'll forget more details of the moment than you think, and a good photographer working from a distance can capture the real reaction without anyone noticing they're there until it's done. Most Long Island and NYC wedding photographers offer dedicated proposal packages now.

Pick somewhere meaningful, not just photogenic. The boardwalk where you had your first date will mean more in 30 years than the cliff in Montauk you visited once.

Get the ring right before the location is set. The ring is the anchor of the day, and the rest of the planning gets easier once you know what you're proposing with. We recommend booking a bridal appointment at least six to eight weeks before the proposal date. That gives time for sizing, custom design, or the natural diamond search if you're going that route.

Don't forget the box. Sounds obvious. Surprisingly often forgotten. We send every engagement ring out in our signature SVS box, ready for the moment.

The Ring Comes First

Wherever you propose — beach, vineyard, boardwalk, or rooftop overlooking the Manhattan skyline — the location will be the backdrop. But the ring is the thing she'll wear and look at every single day for the rest of her life. We've helped thousands of Long Island couples find theirs since 2003, and we still take it just as personally as we did with the first one.

If you're starting the search, you can browse our engagement ring collection online, design your own ring with our online builder, or come see them in person at our Oceanside showroom — where, as we like to say, Long Island gets engaged.
