A 10.30 carat round black diamond, ringed by white pavé — a scale and a
contrast you very rarely see in an engagement ring.
Sami Saatchi bought this stone in Antwerp and carried it home himself.
Antwerp has been the center of the diamond trade for five centuries, and
buying there means sitting across a table from the seller with a loupe in
hand rather than choosing from a list. Sami is a tenth-generation jeweler,
a GIA Graduate Gemologist, and our founder. He then designed this ring
around the stone at our own bench.
The center is a natural diamond that has been color-treated to achieve its
black appearance, which is how the large majority of black diamonds in
jewelry are produced. Treated black diamonds are stable and durable in
normal wear, though the treatment should be disclosed to any jeweler doing
future work on the ring, and steam or ultrasonic cleaning is best left to
us.
Black diamonds read as opaque rather than brilliant. They absorb light
instead of returning it, which is why one at this size looks less like a
gemstone and more like a piece of sculpture on the hand. The 1.58 carats
of white diamonds set around and beside it, VS range and F to G color, are
what supply the sparkle and define the edge of the center stone.
Set in 18K white gold, currently size 5.5. Sizing is handled in house at
our Oceanside workshop by Jorge T., our Master Bench Jeweler, and Oscar
H., our Master Setter.
One stone, one ring, one of a kind. There is no second one and it cannot
