Top 10 Diamond Shapes Guide — Round, Oval, Cushion, Emerald & More

Top 10 Diamond Shapes — A Complete Engagement Ring Guide
Thinking of getting engaged? Before you pop "the question," we always suggest a little reconnaissance — ask a friend, drop a hint, scroll her Pinterest board — to figure out which diamond shape is her favorite. Diamonds come in nearly every shape imaginable, and the cut shape matters more than almost any other choice you will make for the ring. After 23 years and thousands of engagement rings designed in our Oceanside, NY showroom, here is our complete guide to the top diamond shapes.
The 10 Most Popular Diamond Shapes
Diamonds can be cut into virtually any shape — we have crafted horse-shaped diamonds and even a Batman logo diamond for clients with very specific visions. But of all the possible cuts, ten shapes dominate the engagement ring world: round, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, princess, pear, asscher, marquise, and heart. Below we cover the top five in depth, plus a quick overview of the other five you should know.

1. Round Brilliant — The Classic
The round brilliant has held the top spot for a century. According to GIA, more than 60% of couples still choose a round diamond for their center stone. Round cuts have been around since the 1800s, but the modern round brilliant we recognize today was perfected in 1919 by Russian mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky, who calculated the ideal proportions for 58 facets that maximize fire and brilliance.
The shape continues to evolve. Specialty cuts like our SVS Signature 101 diamond feature over 101 facets, designed to capture even more fire and brilliance than a standard round brilliant. Because so much rough diamond is lost during the precise cutting required, round diamonds tend to be the most expensive shape per carat — an estimated 250 tons of earth shifted for every 1-carat round diamond cut.
Best for: Classic taste, traditionalists, anyone who wants maximum sparkle and timeless appeal.
Celebrities who wear round diamonds: Olivia Wilde, Princess Beatrice, Miranda Kerr.
2. Oval — The Modern Favorite
Once a niche choice, the oval has surged into one of the most-requested engagement ring shapes today. The oval cut, perfected by Jewelers International Hall of Fame member Lazare Kaplan, features 58 facets like a round brilliant, which means it can flash nearly as much fire while offering a unique elongated silhouette.
One of the reasons ovals have boomed: an average 1-carat oval has roughly 10% more surface area than an average 1-carat round, making the diamond appear larger on the finger. Ovals also tend to be priced slightly less than rounds at comparable quality, making them a smart choice for budget-conscious buyers who want a big look.
Oval diamonds can be tricky to choose without expert help. Proportions vary widely, and an oval cut with too much or too little depth can show a "bow-tie" effect — a darker shadow across the center of the stone. We always recommend evaluating ovals in person.
Best for: Modern style, those who want a unique-but-classic look, anyone who wants their diamond to look bigger.
Celebrities who wear oval diamonds: Blake Lively, Hailey Bieber, Princess Kate.
3. Cushion — The Vintage Romance
The cushion cut has been around for nearly 200 years, originally known as the "old mine cut" — a combination of a square shape with rounded corners that resembles a pillow (hence "cushion"). The cushion has experienced a major resurgence in popularity, driven by Instagram and Pinterest aesthetics where the antique-meets-modern look photographs beautifully.
More than any other shape, cushion cuts vary dramatically. Depending on the length-to-width ratio, a cushion can look squarish or noticeably elongated. Modern cushions also benefit from improved cutting techniques that produce far more brilliance than the original old mine cuts. When choosing a cushion, the proportions matter enormously — which is why we always recommend evaluating them in person.
Best for: Vintage romantics, brides who want a softer, more antique feel, those drawn to Instagram-favorite aesthetics.
Celebrities who wear cushion diamonds: Sofia Vergara, Kim Kardashian, Meghan Markle.

4. Emerald Cut — The Bold Classic
The emerald cut dates back to the 1500s and is one of the most distinctive diamond shapes. Unlike brilliant cuts (which use triangular and kite-shaped facets), the emerald cut uses parallel "step cuts" running along the length of the stone. The result is a striking "hall of mirrors" effect that emphasizes the diamond's clarity rather than its sparkle.
Emerald cuts feature 57 to 58 facets and create an elongated silhouette that makes fingers look longer and more slender. The cut has a famously bold, sophisticated appeal — favored by women who want a statement piece that does not rely on cluttered sparkle.
Emerald cuts also expose every flaw, so clarity matters more here than in brilliant cuts. We typically recommend VS2 or better clarity for emerald cuts. Length-to-width ratios between 1.44 and 1.56 tend to look most elegant on the finger.
Best for: Sophisticated, modern brides, vintage Hollywood lovers, those who appreciate clean architectural lines.
Celebrities who wear emerald cut diamonds: Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Amal Clooney.

5. Radiant Cut — The Hybrid Sparkler
Newer to the engagement ring scene than the top four, the radiant cut first became popular in the 1970s. The cut is a hybrid that combines elements of the princess cut and the emerald cut — square or rectangular outline with brilliant-cut faceting underneath. The result delivers some of the most fire and sparkle of any cut on the market while offering the modern silhouette of an angular stone.
Unlike round and princess cuts, radiant cuts do not hold official "cut" grades from gemological labs, so comparing radiants on paper alone is unreliable. Some brides prefer a square radiant; others love an elongated one. Radiants can also show a slight bow-tie effect (similar to ovals, pears, and marquise cuts), which only becomes apparent when you see the stone under real light. This is exactly why we recommend evaluating diamonds in person — even with a perfect lab report, a stone's true "life" only reveals itself when you see how it moves with the light.
Best for: Brides who want maximum sparkle in a non-round shape, those drawn to angular silhouettes with a hint of vintage Hollywood glam.
Celebrities who wear radiant cut diamonds: Brittany Mahomes, Draya Michele, Jennifer Lawrence.

The Other Popular Shapes
Beyond the top 5, five more shapes are popular choices for engagement rings, each with their own loyal followings.
Princess Cut. A square brilliant cut that became wildly popular in the 1980s and 90s. Princess cuts deliver intense sparkle in a clean, modern square silhouette. Best for contemporary aesthetics and brides who like geometric lines.
Asscher Cut. A square step-cut, like a square version of the emerald cut. Vintage Art Deco appeal with a distinctive "windmill" facet pattern, beloved by those drawn to 1920s Gatsby-era glamour.
Pear Shape. A teardrop combining the round brilliant and marquise — the sparkle of a round, the elongation of a marquise. Worn point-down for a slimming effect on the finger and a flattering elongated look.
Marquise. An elongated oval with pointed ends, originally cut for Louis XV in the 1700s. Maximizes carat appearance, makes fingers look longer, and creates a distinctive, dramatic silhouette.
Heart Shape. The most overtly romantic of all diamond shapes. Best for symbolic anniversary rings, push presents, and right-hand rings. We recommend 0.50 carats minimum so the heart silhouette reads clearly from a distance.
Beyond the Basics: Custom & Fancy Shapes
Diamonds can be cut into virtually any shape if you have a vision and a stone large enough to work with. At SVS Fine Jewelry, our master jewelers and GIA Graduate Gemologists have crafted unique shapes for clients including horse-shaped diamonds, a Batman logo diamond, and other one-of-a-kind cuts. If you have a custom shape in mind, our Forever Custom service is built for exactly this — design something that has never existed before, made by hand in our Oceanside studio.
How to Choose Your Diamond Shape
Picking the right shape comes down to a few factors:
- Style preference. Classic, modern, vintage, or unique? The shape should match the wearer's overall aesthetic.
- Hand & finger shape. Elongated shapes (oval, marquise, pear, emerald) tend to make fingers look longer. Round and cushion are more universal.
- Lifestyle. Active hands? Choose protective settings (halos, bezels). Career in healthcare or hands-on work? Emerald cuts and bezels are practical choices that minimize snagging.
- Budget. Round is the most expensive per carat. Oval, cushion, and elongated cushion give more visual size for the price. Emerald and asscher require higher clarity (more cost) due to the open table.
- Setting style. Some shapes pair better with certain settings — solitaire, halo, three-stone, vintage. We help match shape to setting during your bridal consultation.
