A Watch Built to Outlast

In 1981, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe watched a friend break a pocket watch — a family heirloom from his father — and decided the watch industry had been getting durability wrong for decades. He proposed building a watch that wouldn't break when dropped, water wouldn't damage, and that would still run after a beating that would destroy any other timepiece on the market. The idea was so ambitious inside Casio that the team handed Ibe a budget and told him to figure it out alone.

Two hundred prototypes and three years later, Ibe's "Project Team Tough" cracked the engineering puzzle. The breakthrough was a hollow inner case suspending the watch movement on a cushion of urethane and air — absorbing shock instead of transmitting it. In 1983, the first G-SHOCK launched in Japan: the DW-5000C. It was square, digital, ugly by the standards of the day, and largely ignored. Then American skateboarders, firefighters, soldiers, and pilots discovered it — the watch nobody could break — and G-SHOCK became a global cultural icon.

Today every G-SHOCK still carries the original engineering DNA: shock resistance, water resistance, and the willingness to outlast whatever life puts it through. Casio has expanded the lineup with full-metal G-STEEL for the office, Tough Solar for never-dies battery life, and BABY-G for smaller wrists — but the core promise remains what Kikuo Ibe set out to build in 1981: a watch that wouldn't break.
